Pac-12 football has great marketing, but it needs championships

Whatever Pac-12 marketing is doing has resonated at ESPN headquarters in Connecticut. “I can report that Bristol is looking west this season,” Scott, entering his fifth season in charge, said. Don’t expect this to mean GameDay is ready to make a trip to Pullman, Wash. The downside to being last-stop leftovers in L.A. was there really wasn’t any fresh news left to report after the coaches dragged their carcasses into a soundstage at Sony Studios in Culver City.

All thats in the past, Okung said. Even last year is in the past. Im just looking forward to having a great camp and going into having a great season. A 2010 Outland Trophy finalist at Oklahoma State, Okung has started 37 NFL games in three seasons. The Seahawks play the AFC South this year as part of the inter-conference rotation. That brings Okung to Reliant Stadium on Sept. 29. AUSTINS HUGHES GETS CHANGE OF SCENERY Jerry Hughes received regular playing time for the first time in his three-year NFL career in 2012. “But fortunately Brek was there to put it in. “It has meant a lot to all of us. We had a dream and a goal and I think we once again showed the American experience.” Donovan, a three-time World Cup standout who has netted five goals in the tournament, has not played in a World Cup qualifier this year after having taken almost four months off between seasons for the Los Angeles Galaxy. But the 31-year-old striker could be poised to return to the top squad for the next US World Cup qualifier on September 6 at Costa Rica and play a key role if the Americans, who top the qualifying table, reach the 2014 World Cup. “We’ll see for the World Cup,” Donovan said. “We have a lot of guys who weren’t here for the qualifying.

“It makes me laugh when they call me the Beast,” Negredo told reporters. “But, yes, I think I am a strong player, who can fight and be physical. “I think I have some qualities that will suit the Premier League. I think my style suits the game in England, but I also like to believe that I have good technical ability as well. “It was my team-mates who first started calling me the Beast of Vallecas. But it became so popular that the media in Spain also started to use the nickname as well. “I think I can be both the physical and technical.

Yes, that deal was made before grant of rights. So Maryland is a lame turtle until 2014, when the ACC will add Louisville . The ACC this year adds Pittsburgh and Syracuse from the old Big East. Big East It fell apart and then reformed as a basketball league built around the Catholic schools. Basketball gets to keep the “Big East” name while football loosely reconfigured as the American Athletic Conference . The AAC keeps its automatic bid in the last year of the Bowl Championship Series , and it’s fitting that outgoing Louisville is heavily favored to claim it. Rutgers plays one last year here before moving to the Big Ten.

Its a piece of our geography and our culture here in the Deep South that people hold onto very dearly, Erdmann said. She had suited up as a defensive back for the Cincinnati Sizzle in the Women’s Football Alliance, which has more than 50 teams and more than 1,800 players. What she found was players reveling in bone-jarring hits as much as any multimillion-dollar masher in the National Football League, in spite of the women earning as little as $1 per game and having to cover their expenses for uniforms, equipment and travel. Worse, the equipment isn’t designed for female bodies, forcing WFA players to search for secondhand fill-in supplies. “Players I knew sometimes got concussions and expressed concerns about head injuries, but no one changed their style of play as a result,” Carter said. Though she has since moved her work to the sidelines, she vividly remembers the first hit she took in a game, getting flattened by an opponent she never saw. “Out-of-the-blue body-blasting pain like that is hard to describe,” she said. When psychologists analyze “the tickle,” what’s the most fundamental fact that might start the discussion? Basically, we cannot tickle ourselves, suggesting that tickling is inherently social, an important means of interpersonal tactile communication and bonding between “tickler” and “ticklee,” says behavioral neuroscientist Robert Provine in New Scientist.

Ligue 1 only has 2 automatic Champions League places in addition to its 1 play-off spot, the fourth being one of the Europa League slots. The final standings for the top 2 positions in the English and Spanish leagues are remarkably similar. For the past 10 years the eventual champions in both competitions averaged 89 points, runners-up still accumulated 82 points. The only real difference is found at 3rd place. English sides average 76 points whereas their Spanish counterparts can only muster 69 points. Its probably because the wealth is more evenly spread in the EPL than it is in Spain where La Ligas top 2 account for more than 50% of the TV-Revenue alone.

13 burning questions for the 2013 NFL season

5. Can anything save Rex Ryan? Well, he did survive the New York Jets’ butt-fumble to 6-10 in 2012. Ryan showed his coaching chops during those consecutive AFC title game trips that feel like a century ago. But his roster just isn’t very good as new GM John Idzik begins an overhaul. Throw in another quarterback debate even one not involving Tebow and it’s not hard to imagine Mark Sanchez-vs.-Geno Smith devolving into another gong show. The only other coaches who kept their jobs after winning six games or fewer in 2012 were Tennessee’s Mike Munchak, Detroit’s Jim Schwartz and Oakland’s Dennis Allen. Oddly enough, given the Raiders’ history, Allen probably has the longest leash of the group. 6.

NFL coach rankings: Personality doesn’t matter, but rings sure do

No one’s perfect, or expected to be, and make no mistake, Elway has done some special stuff in a short period of time — most notably, convincing Peyton Manning to come to Denver, a short-term gamble based on grabbing a Lombardi quickly. But let’s also keep perspective about this regime and recognize that their biggest challenge, and most important decision, is upon them now. That task? Finding a way to properly discipline their top employees and address the perception circulating among their peers that they are a front office out of control. The Broncos sent a fairly strong message with the 30-day suspension of Heckert and the indefinite suspension of Russell. They did not, however, break new ground in what the commissioner doled out in the past and it remains to be seen if both are back by, say the middle of the preseason, which could be the case. Having those personnel execs in place by the time major cutdowns are made would be imperative for the front office as they scan the waiver wire and set their own roster. Russell was seen as a rising star there and Heckert has former GM experience. At any rate it seems both could be back for the start of the season.

In the previous seven drafts before that, only six true safeties were selected in the initial round. Among the safeties teams thought high enough of to select early between 1999 and 2005, the late Sean Taylor as well as Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu stand out. While we might be seeing a trend toward certain organizations looking to add elite safeties, it appears that finding them from the college ranks has become increasingly more difficult. New Orleans, San Francisco and Baltimore all thought it was worthwhile to go out there this past April and target safeties on the first day of the draft. It is interesting that among the three safeties that did go early, only Kenny Vaccaro was considered a first-round lock in the weeks leading up to the draft. The lack of sure-fire safety prospects over the past eight drafts has seemed to lead to some teams placing a lesser importance on the position simply due to the lack of high-quality options. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images Did Eric Berry represent value for Kansas City in the 2010 draft? Just take a look at Eric Berry, whom the Kansas City Chiefs selected with the No. 5 overall pick back in 2010. He jumped onto the scene as a Pro Bowl performer during an impressive rookie campaign that saw him record 10 passes defended, four interceptions and two sacks. Berry was then injured in the very first game of his sophomore campaign back in 2011 and missed the final 15 outings that season.

He has a .726 winning percentage with the Patriots, which helps to erase most of the memories of his Browns years. It helps that he’s had Tom Brady , but he’s a sensational coach, even if he can sometimes come across as an ogre. With all the off-field issues facing his team now, he might have to be at his best in 2013. 2. Tom Coughlin, New York Giants: Two Super Bowl victories with the Giants should cement his spot in the Hall.

By playing out the final year of his deal, Cushing could re-establish himself as one of the best inside linebackers in the game. According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), he was the third-best inside linebacker in the league in 2011. Returning to top-five form would seemingly net Cushing a contract that compares to Paul Poslusznys with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Poslusznys deal calls for an average of $7.5 million per season. Yet, its hard to say whether or not Cushing will ever return to his 2011 form, so Cushing and the Texans should hammer out a contract extension before the 2013 season starts. The agreement would seemingly be a win-win for both sides. Houston would get a star-studded player at a discounted price, and Cushing would have a sense of security after a major knee operation. 5 NFL Teams Already Planning for Next Offseason

For each of these teams, the long-term potential for success is much more promising than the short-term potential will be in 2013. Additionally, they have all made moves this offseason that have indicated a focus on longer-term goals above immediate improvement. Arizona Cardinals Carson Palmer is a short-term quarterback upgrade, but not the franchise quarterback the Cardinals need to contend in the NFC West. Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports The Arizona Cardinals should be better than they were during the final 12 games of last season, in which they won just one game. Even so, its hard to see them finishing anywhere but fourth in the NFC West this season. The Arizona Cardinals have a new coach and quarterback, but their quarterback upgrade is only slight with the free-agent addition of Carson Palmer. While Palmer is a definite upgrade over John Skelton and Ryan Lindley under center, he hasnt been a top quarterback since 2007 and isnt the franchise quarterback the Cardinals need to contend in the division. If the Cardinals were going to make a surprise splash in 2013, they needed to upgrade at quarterback and add defensive playmakers.

Jaworski, who played quarterback in the NFL for 16 years, said in his evaluation of Schaub that he considers a “large body of work over a long period of time, and it’s difficult to argue with Schaub’s success in Houston.” Schaub was ranked ahead of quarterbacks like Andrew Luck (10), Colin Kaepernick (11), Russell Wilson (12), Robert Griffin III (13), Jay Cutler (14), Tony Romo (15), Matthew Stafford (16), Philip Rivers (17), Cam Newton (18), Andy Dalton (19) and Alex Smith (20). “I like Schaub, maybe more than others,” Jaworski said. Jaworski pointed out how well Schaub plays on play-action passes. “Schaub’s 110 quarterback rating off play action was among the league’s best,” he said. “(Schaub) has produced consistent success over a long period of time. There may be no better play-action team in the NFL than Houston.” Schaub led the Texans to a 12-4 record last season and a playoff victory over Cincinnati before they were eliminated at New England. They blew home-field advantage with a 1-3 collapse down the stretch. Schaub, who threw one touchdown pass over the last four games of regular season, has unfairly received most of the blame, even though there was plenty to go around on offense and defense.

Players suing opposing coaches. Out of the question? Not if former NFL player Barrett Green wins his day in court against the Washington Redskins , former Redskins assistant coach Gregg Williams and former Redskins tight end Robert Royal because of a career-ending knee injury he suffered as a New York Giant during a game in 2004. Williams, of course, achieved later infamy when he became defensive coordinator of the Saints and was suspended for a year for masterminding the “Bountygate” scandal. He now is a senior defensive assistant with the Titans. But the Green suit indicates that bounties might have been posted by Williams even before he joined New Orleans in 2009. The lawsuit, filed in May in Maryland state court and later moved to federal court, states that Greens career-ending injury was the result of a bounty program and an unusual, outrageous and an obvious cheap shot. The lawsuit also notes, Other players on the field reacted with outrage at what they saw, and the play was later described as one of the dirtiest, most unfair hits in football. Will the Redskins continue to run the zone read with Griffin despite the risks associated with it? Griffin is no doubt the face and future of the Redskins franchise. It will be interesting to see how Mike and Kyle Shanahan adjust the offense to reduce the risk of punishment and further injury to Griffin. But by the way his recovery is going, Griffin’s off-season is potentially setting him up to have an almost Adrian-Peterson type of season. Coming off of a severe knee injury he suffered in late 2011, Peterson returned for the season opener and went on to fall just nine yards short of the single season rushing record held by Eric Dickerson. Peterson was a large part of the Minnesota Vikings’ success in 2012 and getting them back into playoff contention. He would go on to earn NFL MVP Honors and re-establish his dominance as the best running back in the NFL. Who’s to say we won’t see Griffin hoasting the MVP trophy at the NFL Honors?

NFL teams are starting to realize that running backs break down earlier in their career the more carries they receive. Jackson is just the latest example of that trend. The Atlanta Falcons are hoping that Jackson has enough left in the tank to help them make a run at the Super Bowl. They may have to consider limiting his touches in the regular season with the hope that hes fresh for the playoffs. Jonathan Vilma, New Orleans Saints Ezra Shaw/Getty Images Jonathan Vilma is facing an interesting situation this upcoming season. He is too grabby in tight coverage and his contact downfield will easily attract penalties at the next level. Gilbert gets himself in trouble when biting on fakes and pumps, but his high level of confidence is refreshing for the position. He closes quickly downhill in run support, but his tackling technique is streak at-best with questionable angles when attacking the ballcarrier. Where Gilbert is most impressive is on kickoff returns with his long-striding speed and excellent patience and acceleration to turn on the jets when needed. He has five career touchdowns on kickoff returns through three seasons in Stillwater, but with recent rules limiting kickoff returns in the NFL, his value on special teams might be devalued for some teams. Overall, Gilbert has some desirable traits, but is a tough guy to figure out and needs to show much more consistency if he hopes to be a top-100 NFL prospect down the road. 3. Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker each had over 1,000 yards receiving and at least 10 touchdown receptions in 2012. The stakes are certainly high. NFL games accounted for 31 out 32 of the most-watched TV broadcasts last fall, “more than double the amount of viewers for other prime-time programming on Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC,” Digital First Media said.Fox parent21st Century Fox ( FOXA) (formerly News Corp.), CBS ( CBS ) and Comcast’s ( CMCSA) NBC agreed to pay the NFL $28 billion for broadcast rights through 2022. Walt Disney’s ( DIS) ESPN has a separate $1.9 billion annual deal, and DirecTV ( DTV ) has a $1 billion agreement. The blackout rule has led some teams to come up with creative ways of bypassing it. Some, such as the Oakland Raiders , are reducing their stadium’s seating capacity to make it easier to sell out.The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying the fan-friendly approach to boosting attendance by allowing fans to bypass high concession prices and to bring in food from home . The NFL probably isn’t all that worried about McCain’s bill, because it’s part of the Television Consumer Freedom Act, which would forbid cable companies from bundling less popular channels with popular ones. Broadcasters fiercely oppose what some call a-la-carte pricing, and cable companies have claimed it would make their costs skyrocket.

Rob Rang of CBS Sports wrote that Ross “possesses good quickness to make defenders miss and above average hands,” but Rang also observed that without elite size or top-end speed, Ross may face an uphill battle garnering interest from NFL clubs. However, while Ross may not be the fastest of players, that isn’t to say that he has nothing to offer NFL teams. As the above highlight shows, Ross is a strong receiver, capable of breaking tackles and working over the middle of the field.

OT Cornelius Lucas (6-8, 325, 5.39) Lucas, who committed out of high school to the Wildcats over hometown Tulane, redshirted in 2009 and saw very little playing time as a freshman and sophomore, admittedly because his heart wasn’t fully into it. But when the opportunity opened in 2012 to compete for a starting job, the light finally turned on for him, according to offensive coordinator Dana Dimel, and he rose to the occasion, earning the left tackle job and starting every game. Lucas earned All-Big 12 First Team honors by the coaches after his junior season and emerged as one of the top linemen in the conference and arguably their most attractive NFL prospect. He is a large human being with a naturally wide base and an engulfing wingspan to eat up rushers off the snap. Lucas works hard to gain correct positioning and win with angles, staying balanced and patient with good reaction quickness to trust his eyes and quickly adjust.
